Background of the Study
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have become a leading cause of death in many developing countries, including Nigeria. The prevalence of CVDs in rural areas is particularly concerning, as rural communities often face significant challenges in accessing quality healthcare services, including preventive measures, early diagnosis, and management (Afolabi et al., 2023). Nurses in rural settings play a crucial role in the management of CVDs, particularly in providing primary care, educating patients, administering medications, and monitoring cardiovascular health (Ogunleye et al., 2024). However, rural nurses in Benue State face unique challenges that hinder their ability to deliver optimal care, including limited access to medical resources, inadequate training, poor healthcare infrastructure, and a shortage of specialized personnel (Akinmoladun & Akinyele, 2024).
Despite the growing burden of cardiovascular diseases in rural areas, there is limited research on the specific challenges faced by nurses in these regions. The lack of adequate healthcare infrastructure, compounded by low awareness about cardiovascular risks and disease prevention, exacerbates the difficulties in managing CVDs effectively (Olugbenga et al., 2023). This study seeks to examine the challenges faced by rural nurses in managing cardiovascular diseases in Benue State, with the goal of identifying barriers to effective care and proposing strategies for improving cardiovascular health in rural communities.
Statement of the Problem
Rural nurses in Benue State are central to the management of cardiovascular diseases, but they face several challenges that affect the quality of care they provide. Limited access to resources, inadequate training, and infrastructural constraints impede their ability to effectively manage CVDs. These challenges result in poor health outcomes for patients and contribute to the rising burden of cardiovascular diseases in the state. This study aims to explore the specific challenges faced by rural nurses and identify potential solutions to improve cardiovascular disease management in rural Benue State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the challenges faced by rural nurses in managing cardiovascular diseases in Benue State.
2. To assess the impact of these challenges on the quality of care provided to patients with cardiovascular diseases in rural Benue State.
3. To explore potential solutions and strategies to improve the management of cardiovascular diseases in rural Benue State.
Research Questions
1. What challenges do rural nurses face in managing cardiovascular diseases in Benue State?
2. How do these challenges affect the quality of cardiovascular care provided to patients in rural Benue State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to overcome these challenges and improve the management of cardiovascular diseases in rural Benue State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Rural nurses in Benue State face significant challenges in managing cardiovascular diseases.
2. The challenges faced by rural nurses in Benue State negatively affect the quality of cardiovascular care provided to patients.
3. Implementing specific strategies will improve the management of cardiovascular diseases in rural Benue State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on rural nurses working in Benue State who are involved in managing cardiovascular diseases. The study will examine the challenges they face and how these challenges impact the quality of care. Limitations include the availability of rural nurses for participation and the potential lack of comprehensive data from all rural areas within the state.
